Same sex couple
Your journey to parenthood starts here
Same sex Type
Supporting LGBT+ parenthood the number of LGBT+ receiving fertility treatments is rising swiftly, with more and more couples taking steps to have children.
Female same-sex couples
Options for female same sex couples will generally conceive in one of two ways:
Intrauterine Insemination (IUI), which is often referred to as ‘artificial insemination’. Sometimes a woman will undergo ovulation induction firstIn-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) Either way, a sperm donation is required.
Some lesbian couples may choose shared motherhood (reciprocal IVF). This is where one partner undergoes stimulation and egg collection, and the other carries the fertilised embryo. This gives both mothers a chance to have a biological connection to the pregnancy.
In the interests of medical clarity, we use ‘male/female’ and associated pronouns to refer to reproductive capabilities, realising of course that gender identification and expression can vary.Male same sex couples
Options for male same sex couples:
Biological fatherhood is possible through IVF, IUI, or ICSI. For male same-sex couples, having a baby requires finding a woman prepared to carry the baby to term, either through surrogacy or a co-parenting arrangement. Within this process, you can use the eggs of the surrogate (partial surrogacy) or co-parent herself, or donated eggs (full surrogacy).
Sometimes gay couples seek a surrogate through friends or family, finding it helpful to conduct such a complex, intimate process with someone they already know and trust.

How is it Done?
IVF is a series of procedures to assist in conception. Here, is an easy to understand breakdown of IVF steps:
1Ovarian Stimulation
The female partner starts hormone treatment. Medications like follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) are administered to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs. Blood tests and ultrasounds are used to monitor the follicles.
2Egg Retrieval
Once follicles are of appropriate size, a trigger shot is administered to mature the eggs. Eggs are retrieved from ovaries through a minimally invasive procedure guided by ultrasound.
3Fertilisation
Eggs are combined with prepared sperm in a laboratory dish to allow fertilisation. Sometimes, ICSI is used to inject a single sperm directly into an egg.
4Embryo Development
Fertilised eggs develop into embryos under carefully controlled conditions in the lab over 3-5 days.
5Embryo Transfer
The best quality embryo(s) are selected for transfer into the uterus via a thin catheter, guided by ultrasound. Hormonal support is given to prepare the uterine lining for implantation.
6Pregnancy
Successful embryo implantation may lead to pregnancy. Pregnancy tests are performed approximately 10-14 days after embryo transfer to confirm implantation.
